In 2016, Geoffrey Hinton predicted that AI would replace radiologists within five years, but the profession has instead continued to grow. However, Hinton was right that AI would become a powerful force in radiology: the field now accounts for roughly three-quarters of FDA-cleared AI-enabled medical devices.
These tools assist radiologists by drafting reports, flagging urgent cases, and identifying abnormalities that may escape the human eye. Studies indicate, for instance, that AI-assisted colonoscopies detect more polyps than conventional ones, showing that AI will significantly change—but not eliminate—the radiologist’s role.
