Geoffrey Hinton's 2016 prediction that AI would replace radiologists has not come true; the field is growing, with practitioner numbers expected to rise by at least 26 percent over the next three decades. However, AI has indeed become a vital presence in radiology, which leads medicine in AI adoption.
By early 2026, about three-quarters of the 1,400 AI-enabled medical devices cleared by the FDA were for radiology, helping with tasks such as flagging urgent images, drafting reports, and detecting abnormalities. Studies, including an analysis of 43 clinical trials, show AI can improve performance, such as spotting more polyps during colonoscopies, meaning radiologists' jobs will evolve rather than disappear.
