In 2016, Geoffrey Hinton predicted that AI would replace radiologists within five years, but the profession has continued to grow, with practitioner numbers expected to rise by at least 26 percent over the next three decades. However, radiology has become medicine's biggest AI hotspot: about three-quarters of FDA-cleared AI-enabled medical devices are for this field.
These tools range from efficiency aids to systems that can match or surpass human performance, such as AI-assisted colonoscopy, which a review of 43 trials found detects more polyps than conventional procedures. Rather than eliminating radiologists, AI is poised to substantially change how they work.
