Amazon’s AI Data Center Plans Tied to Texas Gas Plant That Could Become Top US Climate Polluter

Amazon’s artificial intelligence expansion may soon be powered in part by a natural gas-burning plant in Texas that The New York Times says could become the largest single source of climate pollution in the United States. Such plants are increasingly being built alongside data centers, producing emissions linked to climate change and health problems like asthma, heart disease, lung cancer, and strokes.

While some communities are pushing for stricter environmental reviews, the Trump administration has favored fast-tracking projects, sometimes bypassing permitting entirely. The move follows public backlash over Elon Musk’s xAI using gas turbines at its Colossus data center, drawing renewed scrutiny to off-grid facilities like the one Amazon is developing.
