Ex-SpaceX Engineers Launch AI-Driven Robotic Factory Startup for Steel Manufacturing

Three former SpaceX engineers have founded 1872, a startup that uses AI-driven software and robots to automate steel parts manufacturing. The company opened its Factory One facility in Cincinnati on July 22 and initially aims to produce steel skids for modular buildings, targeting customers in AI data centers and small modular nuclear reactors.

By 2027, it hopes to have a prototype factory automating most of the steel fabrication process for critical infrastructure components. CEO Dan Summers says the goal is significant automation—potentially 80%—rather than pursuing full autonomy at all costs.
