Google Wins Auction for Spirit Airlines Employee Data, Raising Concerns

Google won an auction last Friday to acquire a large set of Spirit Airlines data, covering nearly the airline's entire employment and workplace records. The data does not include personal or customer information.

To prevent identification of individuals, Google agreed to have a court-appointed ombudsman oversee the removal of personally identifying information before the transfer, and to keep the data de-identified without attempting to re-identify it. Third parties granted access would be bound by the same conditions, and the deal has alarmed flight attendants.
