Viral videos from the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing show sprinting robots beating Usain Bolt's 100-meter record, but also crashing into barriers and falling due to an inability to stop. Some robots broke apart in showers of sparks or caught fire.
The event, held from August 22–26, also included kung fu, dance, kickboxing, soccer, and table tennis, as well as practical tasks like laundry chores where robots lagged behind human speeds. Organizers, including Chinese state media and the Beijing government, aimed to highlight the commercial potential of humanoid robots amid China's rapid robotics development.
