Bill Oliver, a Progressive Conservative member of the New Brunswick legislative assembly, inadvertently read an apparent instruction from a large language model (LLM) during a floor speech last month. After stating a point about advocacy offices, he added, "here’s a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points," clearly indicating he had prompted an AI for a rewrite.
The gaffe went largely unnoticed until video of the remarks spread on Reddit and Threads, later drawing coverage from the CBC and The Toronto Star. The Star characterized the incident as emblematic of a growing divide between elites who delegate duties to AI and the public who find such reliance objectionable.
