In a world-first medical experiment, surgeons remotely controlled humanoid robots to perform minimally invasive gallbladder removal surgeries on live pigs. The teleoperated robots, described in a study published in Nature, could eventually enable robotic-assisted surgery in smaller hospitals, rural clinics, or even on battlefields and in space at a fraction of the cost and space required by specialized surgical robots.
Dr. Shanglei Liu of UC San Diego noted that the system is easy to deploy and takes up little room, making it accessible to underserved areas.
