Ahead of a July 2 deadline for public comments, privacy advocates are urging the Federal Trade Commission to maintain strict oversight of Elon Musk’s X and reject the platform’s latest attempt to end ongoing audits of its data handling. X had argued that changes made by Musk rendered the FTC’s privacy order unnecessary.
The original order was imposed after a coding error caused Twitter to improperly share users’ contact information, originally submitted for two-factor authentication, for ad targeting. Under this order, X must undergo independent audits and comply with FTC document requests without additional legal action.
