Advocates Warn FTC That Musk’s X Poses a Serious Threat to Americans’ Privacy

Privacy advocates are urging the Federal Trade Commission to reject X’s recent attempt to end ongoing privacy audits, warning that the platform still poses a serious risk to users’ data. The FTC’s oversight stems from a 2022 order imposed after a coding error caused Twitter to improperly share users’ two-factor authentication data for ad targeting.

Under that order, X must undergo independent audits and comply with FTC document requests without additional legal action. X, now owned by Elon Musk, has argued that changes to the platform make the order unnecessary, but advocates insist the FTC must maintain its scrutiny.
