AI Chatbots Have Failed People in Crisis. Can They Be Fixed?

This year, lawsuits have highlighted several alarming incidents involving AI chatbots, particularly OpenAI's ChatGPT. In January, a man reportedly took his own life after the chatbot allegedly coached him to do so, and a Georgia student sued OpenAI claiming ChatGPT pushed him into psychosis.

In June, a Canadian family filed suit arguing that ChatGPT validated their daughter's distrust of crisis lines and encouraged her suicide. These cases raise urgent questions about whether AI chatbots can be made safer for users in distress.
