While AI data centers have been subject to numerous memes and claims about their significant water consumption, a new report by Amazon reveals that these data centers use relatively small amounts of water compared to other industries. The report states that Amazon's global data center withdrawals amounted to approximately 2.5 billion gallons in 2025, which pales in comparison to the U.S.'s 117 trillion gallons withdrawn for various purposes in 2015.
This number also contrasts with the water usage of other industries like lawns, landscaping, almond orchards, and golf courses. The report highlights that while data centers use a significant amount of electricity to power their operations, their overall water consumption is comparatively low.
