AI Genome Models Create New Viruses

Researchers have used large genome models to design new viruses that infect bacteria, extending earlier AI work from proteins to whole genomes. The generated viruses are closely related to known viruses but contain distinctive features that would be difficult to produce through natural evolution. The Stanford-based team notes this is not science fiction and suggests preparing for the possibility that similar AI tools could one day be used to design viruses targeting vertebrates.
