AI Hurricane Model Gives Forecasters an Extra Day to Warn Communities

In October 2025, Google DeepMind and Google Research's WeatherNext AI predicted that a Caribbean storm would strengthen into Category 5 Hurricane Melissa and hit Jamaica five days before landfall, with 80 percent confidence. The earlier warning gave communities extra time to prepare for the devastating flooding and landslides that followed. A study in Nature shows that WeatherNext predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters about one extra day of lead time on average, with three-day forecasts as reliable as previous models' two-day forecasts.
