A study by researchers from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Foscari University of Venice, the University of Melbourne, and Ben Gurion University tested whether AI chatbots can replace human scammers in the early stages of pig-butchering fraud, in which victims are drawn into long text-based exchanges and eventually persuaded to invest in fake cryptocurrency schemes. The chatbots successfully impersonated humans and, by some measures, outperformed real people in building the trust needed to move toward soliciting a fraudulent investment.
The relationship-building phase is typically the longest part of such scams, often lasting months. The findings suggest AI can handle a significant portion of the deception that precedes these costly frauds.
