Radiologists are not being replaced by AI, contrary to Geoffrey Hinton's 2016 prediction, and the field is expected to grow by at least 26% over the next three decades. Still, Hinton was right that AI would become a powerful presence: radiology now accounts for about three-quarters of the 1,400 AI-enabled medical devices cleared by the FDA.
These tools help by drafting reports and flagging urgent cases, and some can spot abnormalities invisible to the human eye. AI-assisted colonoscopies, for example, have been found in an analysis of 43 clinical trials to detect more polyps than conventional procedures.
