AlphaFold AI Used to Make Gene-Editing Proteins Safer by Reducing Off-Target Effects

Gene-editing therapies have faced safety challenges due to off-target effects, where the editing machinery accidentally alters the wrong DNA sequence, a risk amplified by the size of the human genome. Researchers have now employed the AI protein-folding tool AlphaFold to identify key regions of gene-editing proteins that cause these unintended edits. By modifying those regions, they were able to reduce off-target effects, potentially improving the safety of gene-editing treatments.
