Amazon’s artificial intelligence operations will soon be partly powered by a natural gas-burning plant in Texas that The New York Times says could become the largest single source of climate pollution in the United States. Such gas plants are increasingly included in data center projects and emit pollutants linked to asthma, heart disease, lung cancer, and strokes.
While some communities are demanding more environmental review, the Trump administration favors fast-tracking that may skip permitting entirely. The move has drawn public backlash, especially after Elon Musk’s xAI faced criticism for relying on gas turbines to power its Colossus data center.
