Amazon Supports Texas Gas Plant That Could Become Largest US Climate Polluter

Amazon is backing a natural gas-burning power plant in Texas to help meet the energy demands of its AI data centers, a facility The New York Times says could become the largest single source of climate pollution in the United States. Such gas plants are increasingly linked to data center projects and release pollutants that worsen climate change and contribute to health problems like asthma, heart disease, lung cancer, and strokes.

Some communities are demanding stricter environmental reviews, but the Trump administration is pushing to fast-track projects, potentially skipping permitting altogether. The move follows earlier backlash over Elon Musk's xAI using gas turbines to power its Colossus data center.
