Anthropic has accused Chinese tech firm Alibaba of orchestrating the largest known effort to illicitly copy its Claude AI model. In a letter to US senators, Anthropic presented evidence of a campaign from April 22 to June 5 in which operators affiliated with Alibaba generated over 28.8 million exchanges using nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts.
The attacks focused on extracting Claude's most valuable capabilities, including agentic reasoning and software engineering. Anthropic argued that Alibaba must be held accountable for this violation of terms of service and access restrictions.
