Anthropic has paused a planned billing change for its Claude Agent SDK that would have significantly increased costs for heavy users by charging API rates for SDK usage instead of including it in existing subscription limits. The change, announced in May and set to take effect June 15, was abruptly halted on Monday, allowing users to continue drawing from generous weekly usage caps.
Under the current system, power users can extract more value from their subscriptions than equivalent API fees, with analysis suggesting Claude Opus subscribers save money after just two to three messages per day. The reversal prevents a major cost increase for developers and third-party apps relying on the SDK.
