Artist Elmer Saflor, known online as Superelmer, has filed a lawsuit against Memes Apps LLC for using his copyrighted 'Running Away Balloon' comic in its AI meme generator without permission. The company reportedly sells paid subscriptions that allow users to generate ads based on the comic. While Saflor appreciates the widespread sharing of his work as a meme, he argues that commercial exploitation without his consent violates copyright law.
