Artist Sues AI Meme Generator Over Unauthorized Use of His Viral Comic in Ads

Elmer Saflor, the digital artist behind the widely shared “Running Away Balloon” comic, has filed a lawsuit against Memes Apps LLC, the company behind the AI meme generators Memes.ai and Memes AI Studio. Saflor, who goes by “Superelmer,” alleges that the company illegally sells paid subscriptions that allow users to create ads using his copyrighted comic as a template.

While he appreciates the viral spread of his work, he argues that commercializing it without permission crosses a legal line. The lawsuit, filed in early July, seeks to stop the unauthorized use of his art for profit.
