Artist sues AI meme platform for using his viral comic in paid ad templates

Elmer Saflor, the artist behind the viral “Running Away Balloon” comic, is suing Memes Apps, LLC, the company behind Memes.ai and Memes AI Studio, for copyright infringement. Saflor says he is fine with his work being shared as a meme, but not with the company selling paid subscriptions that generate ad templates using his comic without permission.

The lawsuit, filed this month, argues that the AI-powered service illegally commercializes his copyrighted artwork. Saflor is seeking to stop the unauthorized use of his deeply personal creation in commercial products.
