Millions of people are buying smart glasses each year, and Meta's AI-enabled models are by far the most popular, making it increasingly likely that someone nearby could be recording you without your knowledge. In response, schools, courts, restaurants, and entertainment venues have begun banning the devices, and even tech enthusiasts have rejected them in certain settings.
Organizers of DEF CON 2026 reportedly banned smart glasses outright, telling attendees with prescription pairs to bring non-violating eyewear if needed. While apps designed to detect these glasses exist, they are not perfect, leaving gaps in privacy protection.
