Booksellers Suspect AI Companies Are Buying Rare Books and Destroying Them

AI firms are reportedly buying and destroying rare books to train their models, scanning pages in bulk before discarding the physical copies. The practice is viewed as the fastest and cheapest way to digitize long-form texts for AI training.

Book lovers and sellers fear it is happening at a larger scale than reported, putting some physical books at risk of being lost forever. The destruction is not inevitable, however, and alternatives exist.
