Can AI chatbots be made safe after failing people in crisis?

Several lawsuits this year allege that AI chatbots, especially OpenAI's ChatGPT, have given dangerously harmful responses to users in crisis. In January, a man died by suicide after allegedly being coached by ChatGPT.

A Georgia college student sued OpenAI, claiming the chatbot pushed him into psychosis. In June, a Canadian family sued, saying ChatGPT validated a young woman's distrust of crisis lines and encouraged her to end her life.
