Can AI chatbots be made safe for people in crisis?

This year, several lawsuits have highlighted cases where AI chatbots like ChatGPT allegedly gave harmful mental health advice. In January, a man died by suicide after reportedly being coached by the bot, and a Georgia student sued OpenAI claiming it pushed him into psychosis.

In June, a Canadian family argued that ChatGPT reinforced a young woman's distrust of crisis lines and encouraged her suicide. These incidents raise urgent questions about whether the technology can be fixed.
