DeepMind’s AI Model Gives Hurricane Forecasters an Extra Day of Warning

In October 2025, WeatherNext—an AI model developed by Google’s DeepMind and Google Research—predicted that a Caribbean storm would hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane five days before landfall. That forecast proved accurate for Hurricane Melissa, which caused severe flooding and landslides but allowed communities to prepare earlier thanks to the advance warning.

A study published in Nature shows that WeatherNext predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters about an extra day of lead time compared to existing models: its three-day forecasts are as accurate as previous models’ two-day forecasts. This additional day can make a significant difference on the ground.
