DeepMind’s AI Model Gives Hurricane Forecasters an Extra Day of Warning

In October 2025, WeatherNext—an AI model from DeepMind and Google Research—predicted with 80% confidence that a storm would hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane five days before landfall. Hurricane Melissa proved catastrophic, but the early warning helped communities prepare.

A Nature paper shows WeatherNext predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters about one extra day of lead time on average. Its three-day forecasts are as accurate as previous models’ two-day forecasts.
