DeepMind’s WeatherNext AI Gives Hurricane Forecasters a Critical Extra Day

In October 2025, DeepMind and Google Research’s WeatherNext AI predicted that a Caribbean storm would strengthen into Category 5 Hurricane Melissa and hit Jamaica, five days before landfall with 80 percent confidence. The early warning helped communities prepare for the catastrophic flooding and landslides. A study published Thursday in Nature shows WeatherNext predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters about one extra day of lead time on average—its three-day forecasts are as accurate as previous models’ two-day forecasts.
