Developed by Google DeepMind and Google Research, the WeatherNext AI model correctly predicted in October 2025 that a Caribbean storm would become Hurricane Melissa and strike Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane five days before landfall, with 80 percent confidence. Melissa caused catastrophic flooding and landslides across Jamaica, but the early warning helped communities prepare.
A paper published in Nature shows that WeatherNext predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters about an extra day of lead time on average. Its three-day forecasts are as accurate as previous models' two-day forecasts, and that extra day can be critical on the ground.
