A study published in Nature shows that Google DeepMind and Google Research's WeatherNext AI model can predict hurricanes with unprecedented accuracy. In October 2025, the model forecast with 80 percent confidence, five days before landfall, that the storm system would hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane—helping officials warn communities before Hurricane Melissa caused catastrophic flooding and landslides.
On average, WeatherNext provides forecasters an extra day of lead time compared with existing models, making its three-day forecasts as accurate as previous two-day predictions. That additional day can make a significant difference on the ground.
