DeepMind’s WeatherNext AI gives hurricane forecasters an extra day of warning

In October 2025, Google DeepMind's WeatherNext AI correctly predicted that a Caribbean storm would intensify into Hurricane Melissa and strike Jamaica as a Category 5, five days before landfall. The early warning helped communities prepare for the devastating flooding and landslides.

A study published in Nature shows the model predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters about one extra day of lead time compared with previous systems. According to the researchers, WeatherNext’s three-day forecasts are as reliable as older models’ two-day predictions.
