DeepMind's WeatherNext Model Buys Forecasters an Extra Day for Hurricane Warnings

In October 2025, DeepMind and Google Research's AI model WeatherNext predicted that a Caribbean storm would strengthen into a Category 5 hurricane and strike Jamaica, doing so with 80 percent confidence five days before landfall. Hurricane Melissa went on to cause catastrophic flooding and landslides, but the early warning gave communities precious time to prepare.

A study published in Nature shows WeatherNext predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters about one extra day of lead time on average compared to previous models. That additional day can make a critical difference in real-world disaster response.
