The European Commission has preliminarily found that Meta’s use of autoplay, infinite scroll, and highly personalized content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram are addictive. The Commission warned that these features encourage compulsive use by shifting users into “autopilot mode,” leading to unhealthy habits.
It stated that Meta failed to adequately assess the risks these design choices pose to the physical and mental wellbeing of users, including minors and vulnerable adults. Meta now faces the threat of massive fines if it does not disable such features.
