EU Warns Meta: Disable Autoplay and Infinite Scroll or Face Heavy Fines

The European Commission has preliminarily found that features such as autoplay, infinite scroll, and highly personalized content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram are addictive. The EU is demanding Meta address these design elements, warning that failure to do so could result in massive fines.

According to the Commission, Meta did not adequately assess the risks these features pose to the physical and mental wellbeing of users, including minors and vulnerable adults. It stated that such features encourage compulsive use by keeping users in an 'autopilot mode,' leading to unhealthy habits.
