EU Warns Meta: Disable Autoplay and Infinite Scroll or Face Heavy Fines

The European Commission has preliminarily found that features like autoplay, infinite scroll, and highly personalized content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram are addictive. The commission stated that Meta failed to adequately assess the risks these features pose to the physical and mental wellbeing of users, including minors and vulnerable adults. It warned that such design elements fuel compulsive use by keeping users in 'autopilot mode' and urged Meta to disable them or risk substantial fines.
