Ex-SpaceX Engineers Launch Robotic Steel Fabrication Startup

Three former SpaceX engineers have founded a startup called 1872 to automate steel part manufacturing using AI-driven software and robots. The company opened its Factory One facility in Cincinnati on July 22, initially focusing on producing steel skids for modular buildings, AI data centers, and small modular nuclear reactors.

Its near-term goal is to run a prototype factory automating most steel fabrication for critical infrastructure components by 2027. CEO Dan Summers said the firm aims for high autonomy but may stop around 80 percent if full automation offers diminishing returns.
