Ex-SpaceX Engineers Unveil AI-Driven Robotic Factory for Steel Components

Three former SpaceX engineers have launched a startup called 1872 to automate steel manufacturing using AI-driven software and robots. The company opened its Factory One facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, and aims to have a prototype factory automating most steel fabrication for critical infrastructure by 2027.

Its initial focus is producing steel skids for modular buildings, targeting customers in AI data centers and small modular nuclear reactors. CEO Dan Summers said the company may settle for 80% autonomous operations rather than pursuing full automation due to diminishing returns.
