At GitHub Universe on October 28, 2026, GitHub introduced Copilot app and capabilities for working with AI agents. Here is what a team should check before adopting these tools.

Copilot app: a workspace built around the task

Copilot app brings agents and tools together. GitHub describes uses beyond generating code, including specifications, design discussions and telemetry analysis. The practical value of that approach depends on how clearly a team defines the outcome.

For example, “fix search” leaves considerable room for interpretation. A more useful brief supplies a reproducible failure, expected behaviour, compatibility constraints and acceptance checks. That is our editorial process recommendation, not a promise that an agent will always complete the work correctly.

Projects: one goal across repositories

Copilot projects can cover multiple repositories or work that needs no repository. A project keeps tasks and supporting material together and lets users return to the ongoing context. The documentation recommends giving each project a focused goal.

For a web-service team, this is a useful way to organise a change involving a client, an API and documentation. A shared goal should not imply unrestricted permission, however. Before work begins, define which systems may be changed and which should only be investigated.

Fusion: selecting models without manual switching

Copilot Fusion routes requests to a model or a combination of models. Some execution patterns add draft review. Model availability follows plan and administrator policies, while billing reflects the models used; extra review can therefore cost more. Fusion is generally available, but that does not give every account identical capabilities.

Our recommendation is to evaluate the mode on your own workload. A small copy correction and a difficult migration have different acceptable costs, latency and review needs. Speed alone does not establish whether the result passes tests or will be maintainable.

Continue the same session on another device

A cloud session keeps its work in GitHub-hosted infrastructure. Supported clients can continue it without a fresh explanation of the task; account syncing is required. That makes checking progress away from a main workstation more practical.

For a substantial change, final approval should still follow a proper inspection of the diff and test results rather than a short agent summary viewed on a phone.

Automations: triggers and spending controls

Copilot automations run on schedules, events or API triggers, consuming AI Credits and GitHub Actions minutes. A per-run cap can stop ongoing work; daily, weekly and monthly limits prevent new runs instead. Users can accept or dismiss improvements proposed by automations.

A sensible pilot is a task with a straightforward verification method, such as sorting issues or preparing change proposals. After several cycles, compare useful outputs, errors and actual spending. This is a safer basis for widening scope than assuming that every recurring task benefits equally from automation.

Code review remains a separate step

Copilot code review analyses changes and suggests fixes. Organisational access depends on enabled policies, and some scenarios for users without a separate licence require paid usage to be enabled. A review button does not mean that every run is free.

Before adoption, agree on three responsibilities: who accepts the result, which tests are mandatory and who owns the budget. Those decisions turn a collection of AI features into an accountable workflow. This article describes official capabilities as checked on October 29, 2026; we have not conducted an independent comparative benchmark.
