GM Adds 50 Robots at Detroit EV Plant as Over 1,000 Workers Remain Laid Off

General Motors has installed about 50 robot arms made by FANUC at its Factory Zero electric vehicle plant in Detroit, even though more than 1,000 union workers are still on indefinite layoff since March. United Auto Workers officials criticized the move, arguing that the company could recall laid-off employees instead of deploying the new automation. Union Local 22 president James Cotton said the layoffs, initially described as temporary, have left over 1,000 members without work.
