Google's AI expansion drives 37% surge in electricity usage in 2025

Google's annual electricity consumption rose by 37% in 2025, the largest increase in company history, driven by the ongoing AI data center buildout. Total electricity usage has more than tripled since 2019, fueled by growth in Google Cloud, YouTube streaming, and data centers supporting AI services.

Despite this, the company kept operational carbon emissions low by purchasing large amounts of clean energy. Google acknowledged that its AI infrastructure is expanding faster than the grid can decarbonize, but remains focused on advancing clean power and emissions-reducing technologies.
