Google’s annual electricity consumption rose by 37% in 2025, the largest single-year increase in the company’s history, driven largely by the buildout of AI data centers. The tech giant reported that total electricity usage has climbed more than 250% since 2019, with growth in Google Cloud, YouTube streaming, and AI-related infrastructure all contributing.
Despite the surge, Google kept its operational carbon emissions in check by continuing to purchase large amounts of clean energy. The company acknowledged that its AI infrastructure is currently expanding faster than the grid is decarbonizing, but said it remains focused on scaling clean power and developing technologies to reduce emissions.
