Google's Electricity Usage Surges 37% in 2025 Due to AI Data Center Expansion

Google's annual electricity consumption rose 37% in 2025, the largest increase in the company's history, driven by the rapid expansion of its AI data centers. Total electricity use has climbed over 250% since 2019, largely due to growth in Google Cloud, YouTube streaming, and AI infrastructure.

Despite the surge, Google says it kept operational carbon emissions in check by continuing to purchase large amounts of clean energy. The company acknowledges that its AI buildout is currently outpacing grid decarbonization, making the path to its climate goals non-linear.
