Google's Electricity Use Surged 37% in 2025, Driven by AI Data Center Expansion

Google's annual electricity consumption rose by 37% in 2025, the largest single-year increase in the company's history, as its AI data center buildout accelerated. The company’s total electricity use has climbed more than 250% since 2019, fueled by growth in Google Cloud, YouTube streaming, and data centers supporting AI products. However, Google kept its operational carbon emissions in check by purchasing large amounts of clean energy, even as it acknowledged that the grid is decarbonizing more slowly than its AI infrastructure is expanding.
