Google's Electricity Use Surged 37% in 2025, Driven by AI Data Center Expansion

In 2025, Google's annual electricity consumption rose by 37%, the largest increase in the company's history, fueled by the expansion of AI data centers. Total electricity usage has grown more than 250% since 2019, attributed to Google Cloud, YouTube, and AI-related infrastructure.

Google reported that it kept operational carbon emissions down by continuing to purchase large amounts of clean energy. The company acknowledged that the path to its climate goals is not linear, as AI infrastructure buildout is accelerating faster than the grid is decarbonizing.
