Google's annual electricity consumption rose by 37% in 2025, the largest increase in the company's history, fueled by the rapid expansion of AI data centers. Despite this surge, the tech giant managed to keep its operational carbon emissions down by continuing to purchase large amounts of clean energy.
The company's total electricity usage has more than tripled since 2019, attributed to growth in Google Cloud, YouTube, and data centers supporting AI products and services. Google acknowledged that its AI infrastructure buildout is accelerating faster than grid decarbonization, but remains focused on scaling clean power and technological innovations to reduce emissions.
