Google reported a 37% increase in annual electricity consumption in 2025, the largest single-year surge in the company's history, driven by expanding AI infrastructure and data center operations. Despite the rise, the tech giant said it kept operational carbon emissions in check by purchasing large amounts of clean energy.
Total electricity usage has more than tripled since 2019, fueled by growth in Google Cloud, YouTube streaming, and AI services, even as the grid decarbonizes at a slower pace. Google emphasized its commitment to scaling affordable clean power and advancing technologies to cut emissions across its operations and industry.
